Patriots-Jets Preview

The New England Patriots and New York Jets will go head-to-head this weekend in a Week 11 rendezvous, and the Patriots are out to prove doubters wrong about their mainstay status in the league. This weekend’s AFC showdown commences at 4:15 p.m. EST, and this is one of the biggest games of the week, pitting Rex Ryan and Bill Belichick against each other in one of the bitterest rivals in the NFL.

When push comes to shove, the Patriots’ ability to dig deep will surely have in impact on putting Mark Sanchez and his Jets to shame this weekend. When it comes to offensive stats, the Patriots are the clear winners with total yards per game, averaging 416.8 while the Jets average only 339.9. With Tom Brady at the helm, the Pats lead in passing yards per game, averaging 302.7 while the Jets average 169.8. This said, the Jets have a better rushing game than the Patriots, averaging 170.1 yards per game while the Patriots average 114.1.

A lot has changed since the last time New England and New York met on the turf, including the Patriots winning more games and, ironically, the Jets losing more. Rex Ryan’s green-and-white machine has all but broken down over the last few weeks, with Ryan recently saying, “We’ve found (different) ways to lose. We’ve basically been beat on the last play of the game in four games. So, if people think we’re going to be pushovers, they have another thing coming.”

Who will come out on top of the dogpile this weekend? Stay tuned to find out!

What to Expect in Sunday’s Jets Game

The New England Patriots are fightin’ mad, and that has to mean trouble for the New York Jets this weekend. The Patriots-Jets game is sure to be one of the biggest games of the week, and not just because the Patriots are looking to avenge their previous loss to the green and white. The Patriots are also coming off a hard loss to the Indianapolis Colts, and if we can gauge Bill Belichick, New England will be out for blood this weekend.

The Patriots are starting fresh after a disappointing loss to the Colts in Week 10, but, as several of the players acknowledge, the team is not yet ready to dismiss what happened last week. “I think it’s natural to be in a state of urgency (after a loss),” linebacker Junior Seau said this week. “Pressing that urgency button is always there, but even more so when you put so much into a week and it doesn’t work out for you.”

Pats fans better believe the New England Patriots are ready to compensate for their aggravating loss last week, and the fact that this weekend’s game is against the New York Jets is simply the icing on the cake for these hard hitters. Don’t forget to tune in and watch New England bring the heat this Sunday against Rex Ryan’s Jets.

Pats v. Jets - Round Two

Last time the New England Patriots met the New York Jets was in Week 2 of the regular season, when Rex Ryan’s Jets were on fire and Tom Brady was still shaky. A 16-9 score put the Jets above the Patriots in the AFC East, but now the 6-3 Patriots have worked out (most of) their kinks, leaving the 4-5 Jets in the dust. What will happen this weekend when New England and New York face off again?

We’re guessing there won’t be any risky play calls from Bill Belichick like “the incident” from last weekend’s Patriots-Colts game, though judging from last Sunday’s game Randy Moss and Laurence Maroney will continue paving the path for New England’s stellar offense. As far as the Jets go, Mark Sanchez is looking more like a rookie every second, and New York’s game against Jacksonville last week was another disgrace to the AFC East, as the Jets fell to the Jags 24-22 in Week 10.

Both teams are looking to come off very close losses and post another win during the Week 11 Patriots-Jets game, but who will come out on top when the division rivals take it to the football field? The one thing for sure is that New England needs to stop the Jets on defense, as New York’s 170.1 rushing yards a game leads the league. Tom Brady can take care of his team’s offense, and the New England Patriots might just be looking at a 7-3 record after this weekend!

What They’re Saying about Bill Belichick after Week 10

We all make mistakes. Even Bill Belichick is human, it seems, as his decision for his Patriots to run the ball on fourth-and-2 in the final 2 minutes of Sunday’s Patriots-Colts game backfired and is now haunting the all-star coach. While he’s been bashed on all kinds of media outlets this week, Belichick is still defending his decision that led to the Colts squeaking past the Patriots 35-34 in the Sunday night game of Week 10. While his aggressive call in last Sunday’s game didn’t pan out, there’s been tons of talk concerning the play ever since, with ex-Patriots Tedy Bruschi and Rodney Harrison weighing in on the decision, as well as Colts coach Jim Caldwell.

Of “the play,” NBC football analyst and former Patriot safety Rodney Harrison said it was “the worst coaching decision I’ve ever seen Bill Belichick make.”

Similarly, ESPN football analyst and former Patriot linebacker Tedy Bruschi said, “The decision to go for it would be enough to make my blood boil for weeks… I would look at this decision as a lack of confidence in our ability as a defensive unit to come up with a big play to win the game.”

One person who hasn’t taken the chance to give Bill Belichick a tongue-lashing this week is, perhaps, the last person we’d expect: Colts coach Jim Caldwell. When asked about Belichick’s decision to run on fourth-and-2 from their own 29-yard line, Caldwell played down the situation, saying, “There are things that you have to weigh, you have to take into account, and things that are not readily available to the public, so I’m not going to question anybody’s decision, especially someone who has won more Super Bowl championships than most people dream about.”

What will the media be saying about Bill Belichick after Week 11? It’s all to come!

Patriots Fall to Colts in Down-to-the-Wire SNF Game

Last night’s New England Patriots/Indianapolis Colts Sunday Night Football matchup was an all-out fight to the bitter end, and ultimately it was a poor (and very rare) call from Bill Belichick that perhaps left the Patriots in a predicament that ended with Indy’s Reggie Wayne catching a short pass in the end zone with 16 seconds left in the game, putting the Colts up 35-34 at the end of the fourth quarter.

The Patriots led the score for the entire game, even leading 31-14 at the beginning of the fourth quarter. New England got in a tight spot with 2:08 left in the game, however, when the score was 34-28. The Patriots had the ball on their own 28-yard line, and on the fourth down Belichick went for a risky gamble and decided to go for it instead of punting to seal the deal for the Pats. The move didn’t pay off, though, as Indy’s defense held Kevin Faulk just short of a first down, and the Colts recovered the ball in Patriots territory, with Peyton Manning moving it down the field quickly and ultimately hooking up with Reggie Wayne in the final seconds of the game to give Indy a one-point edge.

While the night ended in disappointment for New England, it wasn’t all Bill Belichick’s fault. As New England Sports Museum curator Richard Johnson concluded, “Of course it was the wrong call, but even Babe Ruth struck out.” The Patriots are now 6-3, still sitting atop of the AFC East.

Colts-Pats Preview

The New England Patriots and Indianapolis Colts will face off this Sunday at Lucas Oil Stadium, and this roots-deep rivalry is one that will draw every ounce of strength from the players as the two top-notch teams face for the first time this regular season. While Peyton Manning and Tom Brady seem to be on equal footing while leading their respective teams, there are a few other factors that will certainly have an impact on this weekend’s Colts-Patriots game.

The biggest factor in Sunday night’s game just might be the Colts’ defensive backfield (or lack thereof). The Colts have been absolutely plagued with injuries, and they’ve had to do a lot of shifting to accommodate for players like Adam Vinatieri, Kelvin Hayden, Bob Sanders, Marlin Jackson and Tyjuan Hagler, who are all out with injuries. Bill Belichick knows this, and it will be interesting to see how the Patriots’ coach tries to use and abuse Indianapolis’ secondary.

Don’t count the Colts out, though. Indy is one of only two unbeaten teams after Week 9 of the regular season, and the Patriots have their work cut out for them in pulling out a victory and ending Indianapolis’ winning streak. Don’t miss this big game on Sunday as the Colts and Patriots occupy the Sunday Night Football slot of the week.

Brady vs. Manning

Tom Brady will go up against longtime foe Peyton Manning and his Indianapolis Colts this weekend at Lucas Oil Stadium, and this Week 10 matchup is one of the most anticipated games of the entire year. Is the Tom Brady of 2009 the same old Brady who can give Manning and Co. a little competition, or is he still coming back from that dreaded knee injury? So far this season, Brady and Manning have had very similar seasons, and here’s how they stack up against each other.

Tom Brady, in his comeback year, has accrued 2,364 yards this season, with 16 touchdowns, five interceptions and a 99.2 rating. Similarly, Peyton Manning also has 16 touchdowns and five interceptions so far this season, posting 2,545 yards and a rating of 105.2. While these statistics put the two top-notch quarterbacks in a category all the same, should the quarterbacks’ knee injuries be compared, as well?

Manning had an interview with the Indianapolis Star earlier this week, where he resented the comparison between his and Tom Brady’s injuries. Manning, of course, had offseason surgery on an infected bursa sac before the 2008 season, while Brady took the ‘08 season off to recover from an ACL injury. When talking about the quarterbacks’ separate injuries, Manning also said, “What [Brady's] been able to do, coming back this year… We’ve seen film of the Patriots playing other teams, other defenses, and you can’t tell he missed last year with major knee surgery. He’s picked up right where he left off the year before.”

Is this a sign that the Patriots have what it takes to beat the Colts this year? Look for a big Brady vs. Manning matchup this weekend as the Colts and Patriots fill the Sunday Night Football slot of the week!

Patriots Eye Colts as Week 10 Looms Overhead

The New England Patriots scraped by the Miami Dolphins to pull out a win in Week 9 of the NFL’s regular season, but the Pats hardly have any time to recuperate, as they’ve already got the Indianapolis Colts on their mind. The longtime rivals meet up in Week 10 at Indy’s Lucas Oil Stadium, and this AFC battle is one that’s sure to be a Week 10 highlight.

This weekend’s Pats-Colts matchup will be on even playing ground, and the Patriots might even have an advantage going into the game, as the 8-0 Colts are missing several top players including Bob Sanders, Adam Vinatieri, Marlin Jackson and Anthony Gonzalez. The Colts have secured two pretty ugly wins over the last two weeks against the 49ers and Texans, and this blue-and-white team should prove a good match for the 6-2 New England Patriots, who have won their last three games in a row against the Titans, Buccaneers and Dolphins.

What’s to come this Sunday as Peyton Manning and Tom Brady, two of the league’s top quarterbacks, face off in the Sunday night game of the week? It’s all to come this Sunday at 8:30 p.m. (EST), so stick around to find out!

Pats Stop the Wildcat and Soar over the Dolphins

The New England Patriots beat the Miami Dolphins in a 27-17 battle yesterday in Week 9 of the NFL’s regular season, and perhaps the most significant part of the Patriots’ win yesterday was the fact that New England has proven it won’t be fooled again by the tricky wildcat. The Patriots were down after the first half of the game with the Dolphins leading 16-10, but the Patriots came back strong after halftime, with kicker Stephen Gostkowski sealing the deal in the final minute of the game by booting a 40-yard field goal that put the Pats ahead 10 points, making it impossible for Miami to make a last-minute comeback.

Tom Brady went 25-of-37 for 332 yards and one touchdown in yesterday’s game, and Randy Moss’ six catches for 147 yards and one touchdown made him the game’s most valuable receiver, and Laurence Maroney’s other touchdown helped win the game, as well. The red-hot Patriots have now won seven games in a row, and they hope to keep the momentum flowing as the AFC East competitor now gears up for a Week 10 game against the still-undefeated Indianapolis Colts. Stay tuned for that game, as it’s sure to be the thriller of the week.

Patriots-Dolphins Preview

Miami’s Ronnie Brown returns to face an old foe this Sunday as the New England Patriots go up against the Miami Dolphins in a Week 9 AFC East showdown, but the Fins have more to prove this year than last, when they unveiled their powerhouse of a wildcat play against the Patriots and came out with a 38-13 win. This year, the Patriots will not be surprised by the crafty play, and with Tom Brady back at the helm this Pats-Dolphins showdown is sure to be an entirely different matchup than last year’s.

Brown, a Miami running back who helped the Fins unleash the wildcat last season, is looking to put a dent into New England’s armor again this weekend, but do the Dolphins have what it takes to keep it fresh and beat the 5-2 Patriots? The wildcat is no secret anymore, but of Sunday’s game Brown said, “It’s not about New England versus the wildcat. It’s about the Miami Dolphins versus the New England Patriots and how we can get a win. Whatever it takes - running the ball, throwing the ball, however we get a win, I don’t care.”

So the wildcat won’t be the dominant factor in Sunday’s Pats-Fins matchup, but it is still a significant feature of Miami’s offense, and the Patriots will once again go up against it this weekend as they strive for another win.
