The Patriots closed out the season with a win today, pulling away from the pesky Tennessee Titans and winning by a final score of 40-23. The Titans kept it close until the 4th quarter, when the Patriots finally put the game away with two touchdowns in the final stanza.
Tom Brady did play, and play well, passing for 225 yards and a 62-yard touchdown pass to Reche Caldwell in the third quarter. Although the game didn’t mean much to the Patriots, depending on what the Colts do tonight, they did go into the playoffs on a roll and even got all three of their quarterbacks into the game.

Although he was expected to play, it turns out that the Patriots have de-activated DL Vince Wilfork against the Titans. This is the third consecutive game that Wilfork has missed, and it’s apparent that his sprained ankle is not yet ready for the rigors of an NFL game in the trenches.
It’s certain that the Patriots are hoping to rest Wilfork today so that he’ll be available full-force for their playoff game next weekend.
Fans will remember the Patriots’ final regular season game a year ago, when New England basically tanked their regular season finale against the Dolphins. The game was entertaining, though, as backup QB Doug Flutie scored on a drop-kick and several young players got valuable experience heading into the playoffs. The loss actually helped the Patriots gain a matchup against the Jaguars, whom the Patriots handled with ease on the opening weekend of the playoffs.
This year, however, the Patriots really could use a win against the Titans. If things fall the right way, a Pats’ win coupled with a Colts loss to the Dolphins would give the Patriots the #3 seed in the AFC and a game against the Jets instead of the Broncos. Even though it’s unlikely that the Cleo Lemon-led Dolphins will march into the RCA Dome and steal one against the heavily-favored Colts, that game won’t be played until the Patriots are finished today, meaning that the team has to go for the “W” and hope for the best.
