Although Super Bowl Media Day is usually a meaningless exercise of drivel and canned responses, yesterday’s version of this event offered some insight into the Colts’ win over the Patriots in the AFC title game. Specifically, the Colts offered breakdowns of pivotal plays on offense and defense that led to the ultimate result.
What anyone could decipher from this piece is that the game basically came down to a few subtle decisions on a handful of plays, and if any of these decisions had not been made, the Patriots could be vying for another Super Bowl title. The Patriots have been the unofficial “team of the decade” so far in the NFL. They’ve won three Super Bowl titles and have seemingly been in contention every season. They have a coach considered by many to be the best in the NFL, and they have a QB in Tom Brady who’s already a living legend, and he’s barely getting into his prime.
So how is it that the Patriots enter this weekend’s game at San Diego as an underdog to the Chargers? There are a few reasons, including home field advantage, the presence of the league’s MVP and the Chargers’ rugged defense. However, those attempting to predict the outcome should be very careful to discount this Patriots team.
The Patriots have come through the playoffs as underdogs before, and they’ve shown many times that where they play isn’t as important to them as it is to others. This is a game that will come down to the wire, and anyone who has ever used New England Patriots tickets understands that every game brings the potential for an historic performance.
The sub-plots are already brewing in anticipation of next weekend’s showdown between the Patriots and the surprising New York Jets at Gillette Stadium. There is the shocking appearance in the playoffs by the Jets. There is the perceived dynamic, or lack thereof, between the coaches. There is the age-old rivalry as two long-time divisional foes meet with everything on the line.
Simply put, and as the Boston Herald points out, these two teams do not like each other for many reasons. This all combines to make for a very intriguing game, and it has to feel to the Jets like all the pressure is on the Patriots, as they are favored and expected to advance.

The biggest concern for any team in the NFL that doesn’t have much to play for in the season’s final weeks is injuries. Teams want to make sure that their full roster is healthy and ready for the games that really count in January and hopefully February. That’s why so many teams rest their starters in these types of games.
The Patriots got a huge scare yesterday in their win over the Titans when their defensive leader and chief backfield intimidator, S Rodney Harrison, left the game with an injured knee after a controversial block by Titans WR Bobby Wade. Harrison thought that the block was dirty, and the Patriots as a team were incensed not only by the block but by the apparent reaction of Titans Coach Jeff Fisher afterwards.
Players said that Fisher smiled and winked as Harrison struggled after the block, and LB Tedy Bruschi actually charged the Titans’ sideline in reaction to the play. However, Fisher apologized later and called his reaction “a misunderstanding.” Regardless, it appears that Harrison will be OK, and Pats’ fans are ready to snap up NFL Playoff tickets in order to create a typically-intimidating environment at home next weekend.
The Tennessee Titans were looking to do the impossible yesterday against the New England Patriots. After losing the first five games of the NFL regular season, the Titans were looking to become the first team in NFL history to still make the playoffs after such an abysmal start to the season. The Patriots shut them down and made sure that the Titans wouldn’t be making history. Tom Brady and Vinny Testeverde each threw for a touchdown a-piece and Cory Dillon rushed for two touchdowns as the Patriots topped the Titans 40-23 on Sunday. The Patriots will take on the Jets in the first round of the playoffs. The Jets beat the Patriots earlier this season in New England by a score of 17-14. After that victory, the Jets got the confidence boost they needed to surge and win the wild card in the AFC. Now they have to do something no other team has done in the Belichick-Brady era. Beat the Patriots twice.
