One of the biggest trades made during the draft was the New England Patriots’ gain of Randy Moss from the Oakland Raiders. The Patriots gave up their fourth round pick in exchange and promise to cut Moss if any attitude issues overshadow his playing capabilities. Moss is said to be in favor of the trade and agreed to a pay cut signing a one year contract.
Moss was scheduled to receive $9.7 million through his original contract with the Raiders. The Patriots did not want to fit that into their salary cap so Moss agreed to a new contractworth $3 million with an added $2 million in incentives. He was not the only one to restructure his contract, as quarterback Tom Brady made some sacrifices for the team. According to the Boston Globe Brady restructured his contract in order for the Patriots to afford Moss. Agent Don Yee was quoted, “Tom does what he can in order to win.”
Moss complimented his new quarterback Sunday after the trade took place, “I’ve always been a big fan of Tom Brady from the time that he took over the starting job from Drew Bledsoe, I knew that was a blessing [for] Tom.” The Patriots have a bright future for the the 2007-08 NFL season and will be holding a mini-camp this week. The New England Patriots were one of 32 NFL franchises that participated in the 2007 Annual Player Selection Meeting, most popularly known as the draft. Let’s take a look at who the Patriots chose to add depth to their starting line over the two day event. 255 selections were made total and they had nine picks over the seven rounds including a few compensatory selections.
In the first round at number 24 the Patriots picked up a selection from Seattle and chose Miami safety Brandon Meriweather. All the way in the fourth and fifth rounds at number 127 they got Miami defensive lineman Kareem Brown, and pick 171 got them Colorado State offensive lineman Clint Oldenburg. The most picks came in round six: SMU defensive end Justin Rogers, Albany corner back Rashad Barksdale, Central Connecticut running back Justice Hairston, and Oklahoma State offensive tackle.
In the seventh round the Patriots had two picks, one from Oakland at number 211 and they chose USC linebacker Oscar Lua. The final pick was at number 247, Iowa offensive guard Mike Elgin, which none of these will not change the starting line for the team, but will put a little more security in depth and the teams’ future. The Patriots’ goal for the next few years will be building replacements for contracts that will be ending, and your goal should be to get Patriots tickets on StubHub.com.
