Not that it’s at all surprising, but ESPN.com has reported that the New England Patriots have failed to sign franchise player Asante Samuel to a long term contract. What this means in the long term is that you probably won’t be wearing that Asante Samuel jersey you bought to Patriots games next year. What it means in the short term is absolutely anyone’s guess. Samuels has said he won’t show up to play until week 10 of the NFL season. Whether or not he follows through on that threat remains to be seen. It’s been reported that Samuels has softened that stance in recent days.
I think that overall this is a good move for the Patriots. I’m all for not letting a player - or his agent - muscle you around. And the Patriots have always had a “team first” mentality. And of course, all of this becomes a moot point if Samuels shows up, plays his butt off in a contract year, and then leaves. I believe he will show up for camp. I think he’ll play this year, make good money for his position, win one more Super Bowl, and then run off and make a ton of money playing football in another city.
