Pats have one extra day to sign Samuels

A glitch in the system will extend the deadline to sign franchise players one extra day, to July 16, 2007.  The actual cut off date is July 15, according to the new collective bargaining agreement.  However, since July 15 falls on a Sunday this year, the date is actually extended to Monday.  Whether or not this helps the four teams who have yet to sign their franchise players remains to be seen.

As far as how this affects the situation between the Patriots and Asante Samuels, i’d say it probably affects it very little.  The sides appear to be at an impasse, and I don’t think an extra day of negotiations are going to help the Patriots and Saumels see eye to eye.  Samuels of course believes that he deserves more money and a long term contract.  Unfortunately, he’s on a team where Super Bowl MVP quarterback took a paycut to help build a winner.  I really don’t see the Patriots giving him what he wants, so unless Samuels changes his mind, I don’t see this extra day doing much to help his situation with the Patriots.
