Pats Move to 4-0

In case you missed the game, John Clayton has written a stirring article on the Monday Night Football dismantling of the Cincinnati Bengals at the hands of the New England Patriots.  The Patriots absolutely destroyed the depleted linebacking corps of the Bengals, rushing backup running back Sammy Morris for more than 100 yards on the night.  All in all, the New England backup platoon filled in nicely for Laurence Maroney, who sat out with a groin injury.  The Patriots didn’t seem to mind at all, showcasing the amazing depth they have at every single position by throwing all their backup runners at Cincy for combined total of nearly 200 yards.

What the Patriots are doing right now is amazing. This type of pure dismantling of each opponent on the way to a 4-0 record is almost unheard of in the NFL, and the whole thing is made even more astounding the by the historical context in which the Patriots are putting on such a display.  The rules are set up to keep a team like this from ever forming.  The deck is stacked so monumentally in favor of parity and against dynasties in the NFL.  This makes the dominance of the Patriots all the more special every single week that it continues.  They now have a short week to get ready for the Cleveland Browns.  And we all know how much Belichick loves to beat up on his former assistants.  The Pats are staring at a very realistic 5-0 start to the 2007 season.
