Though New England fans and players alike may have wished that they could have welcomed the Indianapolis Colts to Gillette Stadium this Sunday, this article claims that the Chargers/Pats rivalry may become the newest and most contentious rivalry in the NFL. I would be inclined to agree. Think about it. The Chargers, right now - without a Los Angeles football franchise in the NFL - are the quintessential SoCal pro football team by default. The Pats are the opposite side of the spectrum. It’s day and night with these guys. It’s veterans versus young studs just reaching their prime. It does indeed have all the makings of a classic football rivalry.
There is just one thing missing from this rivalry: Competition. The Chargers will need to beat the Patriots before we can legitimately call this a rivalry. Just like the Pats seem to have the Colts’ number all those years, now it would appear they have the Bolts’ number as well. They knocked the Chargers out of the playoffs last year and beat them easily in the regular season this year. If the Patriots continue to roll over the San Diego Chargers in the AFC Championship, then it’s not yet a rivalry. However, if the Chargers can at least make a game of it, then we might have something here.
