Cheerleading is an American tradition. It’s a natural extension of the bigger, better, flashier aesthetic that’s quintessentially American. The British play cricket with sweaters and polite applause. We play football with megascreens, glittery cheer squads and possibly Prince playing during halftime.
Now it looks like America is exporting it’s razzle-dazzle abroad just in time for the 2008 Olympics. China, if you’ve been following the news, has been making huge strides to make this the biggest event in that country for the decade. They’re apparently preparing their own national cheer squad, composed of 200,000 volunteers, largely from civil servants. Another 400 will be part of a group of professional dancers that will be trained by the fine ladies of the New England Pats cheerleading team.
So there you have it: Cheerleading does bring people together, whether it’s over a great game or a historic national event.
