It was a cold, rainy Sunday in New England yesterday, and the Pittsburgh Steelers took advantage of the Patriots’ lack of cohesion as they thundered over Matt Cassel and his teammates in a 33-10 Steelers win in the Week 13 showdown, leaving the Patriots behind the New York Jets in the AFC East with a 7-5 record. This week’s loss also puts New England in a tie with the Miami Dolphins in the division, falling behind the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens in the wild card race.
Sammy Morris scored the Patriots’ only touchdown yesterday as the mighty Pittsburgh defense shut down Cassel’s 400-yard game streak. Pats receiver Wes Welker exited the game late in the third quarter after taken down by Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark, and New England’s other star receiver Randy Moss also struggled a bit in yesterday’s game, dropping two passes while standing wide open. Stephen Gostkowski also missed a 27-yard field goal, and all of these blunders added up to a troubling loss for the Patriots.
Bill Belichick is never one to let his team get down, so look for the Patriots to rally next week in their Week 14 matchup in Seattle when they face the Seahawks next Sunday.
