The Fate of Bruschi

The New England Patriots are on the West Coast this week coming off a win in Seattle while preparing for next week’s game against the Oakland Raiders, but one player who won’t be joining them in California this week is veteran linebacker Tedy Bruschi, who left last week’s game against the Seahawks with a knee injury. Bruschi reportedly flew back to Massachusetts following the Patriots’ 24-21 over Seattle on Sunday, undergoing tests this week on his left knee.

Bruschi’s injury came in the second quarter of Sunday’s game when his knee collided with teammate Mike Richardson helmet-first. Bruschi’s knee had been bothering him for the last couple weeks, but his collision with Richardson pushed it over the top, though Bruschi was seen walking out of the locker room after Sunday’s game. It is expected that Bruschi will be out at least three or four weeks, but nothing is official at this point except the fact that the Patriots need this linebacker and 13 year veteran in the team’s last few important games of the season. Bruschi is just one more defensive player on New England’s roster to go down with an injury this season, following Ty Warren, Pierre Woods, Rodney Harrison, Adalius Thomas and Terrence Wheatley.

Cassel, Welker Lead Patriots Past Seahawks in Week 14

It was a very close game last night in Seattle, yet the New England Patriots rallied to beat the Seattle Seahawks 24-21 in one exciting matchup. Matt Cassel’s 268 yards throwing combined with Wes Welker’s 134 receiving to give the Patriots another win on their schedule, bringing the Pats’ record to 8-5 while the team tries to hold onto an AFC wildcard spot in the playoffs.

New England’s strong offense made up for any holes the team’s injured defense left in yesterday’s game  as Randy Moss, Sammy Morris and Wes Welker combined to clinch the matchup in Seattle. Moss collected 56 yards in yesterday’s game, giving him a career total of 13,000, but it was Morris who deserves the praise for play of the week, as his one-yard touchdown on the fourth down with 2:44 left in the game solidified a win for the Patriots. Welker then scored on a two-point conversion to put the nail in the coffin. New England’s record for games after losses now stands at 18-1 (since 2003), and the Patriots will now gear up for another game on the West Coast, traveling to Oakland for next week’s Pats-Raiders matchup.

More Changes for New England

The Associated Press announced yesterday that along with the signing of linebacker Rosevelt Colvin to the Patriots’ faltering defense will come yet another NFL veteran ready to suit up in New England blue and red: the one and only Junior Seau. The 39-year-old linebacker and 12-time Pro Bowler has spent most of this season nursing a hurt shoulder, and now Seau is ready to come back into the game as a replacement for Adalius Thomas, who will miss the rest of the season due to an arm injury. Junior Seau is a 19-year NFL veteran and played 27 games for the Pats over the last two seasons, but hasn’t played with New England this year.

The news of Seau’s return to New England comes just days before the Patriots take on the Seahawks at Seattle, a must-win game for the Pats to still have a shot at the playoffs. The last time the two teams met was in 2004, when New England slid past Seattle30-20. Look to Sammy Morris to deliver for the Patriots, as the running back is recovering from a knee injury in Week 7 that is constantly improving.

Green’s Efforts Golden Even off the Field

Jarvis Green has done it again, folks. The invaluable New England defensive lineman is known for his contributions to the community, and the former New England Patriots Ron Burton Community Service Award winner is making headlines once again for his charitable deeds, this time at the Hasbro Children’s Hospital in Rhode Island. Earlier this week, Green made a visit to the children’s hospital to support a fundraising campaign called “Change Bandits,” a program encouraging people to collect and donate loose change to the hospital for treatment and life-saving equipment. Jarvis Green made the rounds at Hasbro this week spending time with patients, signing autographs and handing out lunch boxes, basketballs and numbered jerseys.

This kind of community service is nothing new for the Patriots defensive lineman, as he has also contributed time and effort to aid victims of Hurricane Katrina in the past. Green also founded the Jarvis Green Foundation, a non-profit organization aimed at giving money and support to single working mothers in low-income areas. The standout athlete is just as valuable when geared up in pads and helmet, as the seven-year Patriots veteran out of Louisiana State University has tacked up 236 tackles, 25 sacks, seven forced fumbles and five fumble recoveries in his previous six seasons in the NFL.

Last Minute Buildup for Pats Defense

Adalius Thomas is out with a forearm injury. Eric Alexander is on the reserve/injured list with a hamstring injury. Pierre Woods is sitting the sidelines with a mouth injury. Three linebackers, three injuries; what do the Patriots do now that their depth is slowly melting away? Sign Rosey Colvin, of course! After hosting the free agent Colvin at Gillette Stadium earlier this week, New England has signed the former Patriot back onto the team.

Rosevelt Colvin, a 10-year NFL veteran and 6’3”, 250-pound linebacker out of Purdue University, spent five seasons with the Patriots (2003-2007) before being released last February. He was picked up by the Houston Texans but released after training camp, not playing a game yet this season. The Patriots hope signing Colvin will help ease the pain from the hole their injured list leaves, and with his 414 tackles and 52.5 sacks in his nine seasons (with the Bears and the Patriots,) he certainly will aid New England’s faltering defense. The team also signed linebacker Angelo Craig to the practice squad, and the two will jump right into play to help the Patriots gear up for next week’s game against the Seattle Seahawks.

Patriots to Take Season to U.K. in ‘09

The New England Patriots will follow in the footsteps of this year’s New Orleans Saints and San Diego Chargers next year in traveling to Wembley Stadium in London to play a regular season game against the Tampa Bay Buccaneers. The Bucs will “host” the Pats in the overseas game on October 25, 2009, giving up a home game in Tampa for a shot in the U.K.

Next year’s game will mark the third straight year the NFL will have a regular season game in Britain in an attempt to herd even more NFL fans overseas. This year, the Saints and the Chargers battled at Wembley Stadium before a sold-out crowd of 83,000 fans (and the Saints won 37-32), and last season it was the New York Giants and Miami Dolphins who performed before a sold-out arena at Wembley (the Giants won 13-10.) The NFL’s move to the U.K. comes as no surprise to the game’s analysts, as “American football” has seen a rise in fans in the U.K. over the past few years. This year’s Saints-Chargers matchup drew in more than a million and a half applications for tickets, and next year’s British showdown between the Patriots and the Bucs is expected to corral even more.

Pats Fall to Steelers Yet Remain in Playoffs Race

It was a cold, rainy Sunday in New England yesterday, and the Pittsburgh Steelers took advantage of the Patriots’ lack of cohesion as they thundered over Matt Cassel and his teammates in a 33-10 Steelers win in the Week 13 showdown, leaving the Patriots behind the New York Jets in the AFC East with a 7-5 record. This week’s loss also puts New England in a tie with the Miami Dolphins in the division, falling behind the Indianapolis Colts and Baltimore Ravens in the wild card race.

Sammy Morris scored the Patriots’ only touchdown yesterday as the mighty Pittsburgh defense shut down Cassel’s 400-yard game streak. Pats receiver Wes Welker exited the game late in the third quarter after taken down by Pittsburgh safety Ryan Clark, and New England’s other star receiver Randy Moss also struggled a bit in yesterday’s game, dropping two passes while standing wide open. Stephen Gostkowski also missed a 27-yard field goal, and all of these blunders added up to a troubling loss for the Patriots.

Bill Belichick is never one to let his team get down, so look for the Patriots to rally next week in their Week 14 matchup in Seattle when they face the Seahawks next Sunday.
