Will Matt Cassel get the franchise tag by the New England Patriots? The question still looms, but in the meantime the former USC backup quarterback continues to enjoy recognition still radiating off his stellar performance this season as the New England Patriots starting quarterback after Tom Brady was forced to sit the season out with an ACL injury.
Cassel braved the battle lines as a little-experienced NFL quarterback against the biggest and best of teams this season, and all for just a fraction of what the league’s starting quarterbacks earn. Cassel’s $525,640 a year is just pennies compared to Brady’s $8,001,320, and for his courageous contributions to the NFL this season Cassel has been announced the recipient of the 2008 Vizio Top Value Performer Award. The HDTV company awards one pro football player a year with a smaller contract that emerges onto the NFL scene and performs beyond expectations, and Matt Cassel more than deserves this award for his incredible play in the 2008 NFL season. Other players Cassel went up against for the Vizio award were WR Antonio Bryant (Tampa Bay), DB Nick Collins (Green Bay), WR Brandon Marshall (Denver) and RB Steve Slaton (Houston).
