The New England Patriots may or may not be signing Carolina Panthers defensive end Julius Peppers anytime soon, but in the meantime the Pats have locked down a number of players, taking the weekend to move deals signing offensive lineman Al Johnson and re-signing offensive lineman Wesley Britt, safety Ray Ventrone, safety Tank Williams and defensive lineman Mike Wright.
The Pats’ acquisition of Johnson came in an undisclosed deal, as the 30-year-old veteran comes to New England after having spent 2008 with the Miami Dolphins. Johnson was drafted by the Cowboys in the second round of the 2003 NFL Draft and played for Dallas through 2006, joining the Arizona Cardinals in 2007 before making the jump to Miami as a free agent.
Wesley Britt has been a Patriot since 2005, when he was signed after being released from the San Diego Chargers. Ray Ventrone was signed as an undrafted free agent to the Pats in 2005 and has played for the New York Jets in between time with New England. Tank Williams has played with the Tennessee Titans (2002-2005) and Minnesota Vikings (2006-2007), and he was added to the Patriots’ roster in 2008 as a free agent. Mike Wright signed with the Patriots as an undrafted rookie free agent in 2005 and has been with the team ever since.
