With all these rumors circulating about Julius Peppers heading to New England for next season, someone had to put his/her foot down on the situation, and that someone was Bill Belichick, as the New England Patriots head coach went on air with the Boston radio station WEEI this week to clear things up with the Peppers situation. Belichick took the opportunity to squelch rumors that the Pats have been talking with Peppers, even saying that if the Patriots were to sign Julius Peppers to a deal, it would take a while to nail down a contract.
While the Bill Belichick interview was true to form in the sense that he wasn’t revealing anything more than the bare minimum, Belichick did say that nothing will happen with the Pats and Peppers until Peppers signs his franchise tender. Belichick made a statement saying, “I think if a player wants to be traded or wants to be in a position where he could be traded, then the best thing for that player to do is to do what Matt Cassel did, which is to sign the tender, be under contract. Then go to the team and say, ‘OK, I don’t want to be here. You can trade me. Here is where I want to go.’ Or the team can say, ‘Here is what we would accept for you.’” So will Julius Peppers end up with the Patriots? Bill Belichick isn’t saying, so we’ll just have to wait to find out!
