It could be, but Panthers GM Marty Hurney tried to put out the fire yesterday, making a statement to the press that “we’ve known Julius for seven years, and it has been a good seven years. I think he knows how we feel, and we feel like he’s been happy here. And again, nothing has changed. We franchised him, and when we did, we knew there was a period for the process to take place. When that process goes through, then he’s going to be back.” Not so fast, Hurney. This statement sounds awfully familiar to the one we heard from the Denver Broncos right before Jay Cutler was traded, and despite Hurney’s insistence that Julius Peppers will be back in Carolina for the 2009 season, we’re tempted to believe otherwise.
Peppers has already made it very clear he’s not intending to play for the Panthers this year. He’s selected four teams he’ll play for, and both the Philadelphia Eagles and the New England Patriots have expressed interest in him. Nothing has been settled yet, but the Eagles have the salary cap space and first round picks desirable for a trade with the Panthers, and the Patriots aren’t far behind. We say don’t give up hope on a Peppers to New England deal, as the trade could be closer to happening than we realize.
