The New England Patriots have taken yet another step forward in preparing for Saturday’s NFL Draft, locking down another player - linebacker Pierre Woods - by re-signing him to a reported $1.54 million deal with his restricted free agent tender. This deal is no surprise to Patriots fans and critics alike, as Woods has been projected to take over the outside linebacker position the team left open when New England traded LB Mike Vrabel earlier this off-season in the same deal that took QB Matt Cassel to Kansas City. In a press conference held yesterday afternoon at Gillette Stadium, Bill Belichick stated simply that, when it comes to Pierre Woods, “He’s ready to go.”
Woods joined the Patriots in 2006 as an undrafted rookie free agent out of the University of Michigan, where he played all 12 games as a senior and made five starts as linebacker. In 2008 the linebacker took over for Adalius Thomas while Thomas was out with an arm injury. Also last season with the Patriots, Pierre Woods led the team in special team tackles three times before suffering a season-ending jaw injury toward the end of the season.
