Smith Re-Signs with Patriots

He may have missed the entire 2008 football season, but the New England Patriots are ready to let DL Kenny Smith try it again. The 6’4”, 303-pound lineman reached an agreement with the Patriots in an undisclosed deal yesterday, re-signing with the red and blue and helping solidify the team’s defensive line in the wake of tomorrow’s NFL Draft. Smith was released by the Patriots at the end of 2007 yet signed again with the team in 2008, and now he’s back on Bill Belichick’s bus for 2009, as well.

Kenny Smith was drafted into the NFL out of the University of Alabama in the third round (81st overall) of the 2001 NFL Draft to the New Orleans Saints, where he played until 2004. Smith then played for the Oakland Raiders in 2005 but spent the year on the injured reserve, spending 2006 out of the league and signing with Tampa Bay as a free agent in 2007. After being released from the Bucs in April of ’07, Smith next found a home with the New England Patriots, which is where he remains today. Smith sat out of the entire last season after suffering an arm injury on August 30, 2008, but he hopes to make it up with a stellar season in ’09.
