In Draft Day Shocker, Pats Ship Hobbs to Philly

That’s right; first it was Mike Vrabel, now it’s Ellis Hobbs. The fifth-year NFL player with the New England Patriots was traded to the Philadelphia Eagles in a surprise move from the Pats yesterday, sending the cornerback to Philly for the acquisition of two fifth-round picks (137 and 141 overall). The Hobbs trade was largely considered to be an unplanned event that took shape over the course of the draft, clearing room for new Patriots Leigh Bodden, Shawn Springs and Darius Butler to grow with the team.

In what was the surprise move of the draft for the Patriots, Hobbs now joins former teammate Asante Samuel with the Eagles, perhaps becoming the replacement for CB Sheldon Brown, who has publicly requested to be traded from Philadelphia. Hobbs expressed surprise but no remorse for the deal that’s shipping him to Philadelphia, however, saying, “Personally, I think it’s shocking because you’ve been playing so many years for an organization, but on the other side it’s a business. I had been telling my family members for a while – I just had a feeling. Then you kind of feel things out, you see how the organization is making moves throughout the offseason. You figure that something is going to shake, you just never know when, but when I got the call… no bad blood, no hard feelings. It is what it is and I’m excited to be playing for the Eagles now.” More draft day coverage tomorrow.
