Darius Butler, Come On Down

He’s not the next contestant on The Price is Right, but UConn’s Darius Butler might be an even bigger winner than projected. The 5-foot-11″, 183-pound cornerback impressed the masses at last month’s NFL Combine, even having contact with the Patriots at his Pro Day, and he was plucked from the second round of the NFL Draft (41st overall) by the New England Patriots to fill the gaping hole at corner, leaving Pats fans to make a connection of similarities between he and Asante Samuel. The position at corner has been bleak since Samuel left New England for Philadelphia, but the addition of Butler gives the Patriots hope in building up the position.

Recently asked about who he models his playing after, Darius Butler (not surprisingly?) mentioned the name Asante Samuel, saying, “He [was] obviously a great Patriot and I model myself after him. I’ve been compared to him by a lot of DB coaches going around on my visits and workouts in the league, and hopefully I can have the same kind of success he had early in his career, the last couple years when he was a Patriot. Like I said, I know I have to work to get to that level, and I’m looking forward to putting in all of that work.”
