The New England Patriots have just finalized a deal with the Baltimore Ravens, sending linebacker Prescott Burgess from Baltimore to New England for a conditional seventh-round draft pick in 2010. Burgess was primarily used this season in Baltimore on the Ravens’ special teams, and he’s expected to fill the shoes of Jerod Mayo in New England, as Mayo sprained his right knee in the Patriots’ season opener and is expected to be out of commission for the next six to eight weeks.
Prescott Burgess was drafted to the Ravens out of Michigan in 2007 as a sixth-round draft pick, playing in eight games as a rookie before ending the year on the injured reserve with a hip injury. Burgess was then out for the entire 2008 season after injuring his shoulder in the preseason, and now after playing two games with the Ravens he will take his talents to New England. To make room for Burgess on the roster, the Patriots cut center Ryan Wendell. In Baltimore, the Ravens used their extra roster space to pick up tight end Tony Curtis, who was released earlier this month from the Philadelphia Eagles.

Don’t look for the New England Patriots to be in the top five of the NFL’s power rankings this week. In fact, after just barely beating a mediocre Buffalo team in Week 1 and falling to the Jets on Sunday in Week 2 of the regular season, the Patriots have a lot of catching up to do to stay in the top 10 of this week’s rankings. The Patriots are still reflecting upon the stunning loss to the Jets last week after all the trash talking Rex Ryan and Co. have been doing over the last couple months, and you better believe Tom Brady is psyching himself up for next week, when New England plays the Atlanta Falcons in Week 3.
When asked about his thoughts on the Jets game, Brady said that, offensively, “we didn’t do much. We’re not really firing on all cylinders. It was poor executing a lot of the time. I’ve got to be more accurate.” With Wes Welker out of action Sunday and Randy Moss being swarmed by green and white defensive players, Brady had trouble hooking up with receivers, which is normally the Patriots’ strong point. Hopefully the Patriots will be back on track for next week’s big game, as the Falcons are currently 2-0!

The New York Jets didn’t “embarrass” the New England Patriots yesterday like Kerry Rhodes suggested, but the Patriots did suffer their first loss of the regular season yesterday as they lost a tough game to the Jets, ultimately losing the battle in New York with a score of 16-9. Tom Brady and the Patriots were just no match for rookie Mark Sanchez and his New York Jets, and it appears as if Rex Ryan’s trash talking strategies paid off, as the Jets beat the Patriots in New York for the first time since September of 2000.
The biggest downfall of yesterday’s Patriots-Jets matchup was probably the glaring absence of Wes Welker, as the receiver sat out of the game with a knee injury, and the Patriots just couldn’t get a handle on the blitz, as Brady was knocked down five times and hurried 15 times during offensive play. The Patriots never got the chance to score a touchdown, and the Jets ran away with the victory at the end of the day. Now running on adrenaline, the Jets are feeling invincible. Of yesterday’s game, Jets fullback Tony Richardson said, “Rex Ryan’s a frickin’ defensive genius, and it was evident today. I’m glad I wasn’t trying to pick up all that stuff (that the Jets’ defense was throwing at New England). They were coming from everywhere.” The Patriots will get the chance to avenge this loss on Nov. 22, when the Patriots and Jets play each other again - this time at Gillette Stadium.

Rex Ryan and the New York Jets better be ready to put their money where their mouths are. The trash-talking extraordinaires have done nothing but fuel the fire to the already-smoldering Patriots-Jets rivalry, and you better believe Bill Belichick and Co. will be ready for war when New England and New York face off this weekend in one of the must-see matchups of Week 2. Ryan’s comment about kissing Bill Belichick’s rings caused a stir earlier this offseason, and it seems like the Jets’ new head coach is making no efforts to keep his players from doing the same.
The newest Jet to cause a scene in the media is free safety Kerry Rhodes, who stated his plan for this weekend’s game earlier this week, saying, “You go out from the first quarter on, from the first play on, and try to embarrass them. Not just go out there and try to win, try to embarrass them. Try to make them feel bad when they leave here. We don’t want to just beat them. We want to send a message to them, ‘We’re not backing down from you and we expect to win this game, and it’s not going to be luck, it’s not going to be a mistake.’” Rhodes went on to boldly promise that the Jets’ defense would hit Tom Brady more than six times, a claim that will need to be backed up this weekend. The Patriots keep stating they aren’t taking this trash talk to heart, and we’ll see this weekend which is the better team.

The New England Patriots and New York Jets are one of the NFL’s biggest rivalries, and there’s much to look forward to this weekend - especially as Jets coach Rex Ryan has been fueling the fire over the last several months, speaking out to the media about not being scared of the Patriots. He’ll have all that to prove and more on Sunday when the Patriots and Jets take their battle to the football field, and former Patriot and current NBC analyst Rodney Harrison said that Ryan’s previous quote (”I didn’t come here to kiss Bill Belichick’s rings. I came here to win… I’m certainly not intimidated by New England or anybody else”) will most certainly be used as material for the Patriots to get fired up for this weekend’s game.
“When people make comments like that, whether it’s toward an individual coach or an individual player, everyone takes offense,” Harrison said. “You keep that quote in your mind. You put it up on the bulletin board. I don’t think that’s going to make Belichick more mad at him, or make Belichick hate the Jets even more, or for them to play harder. I just think the point of emphasis will be on that.” While talk is cheap, there’s one significant player who won’t see this Sunday’s big matchup: Jerod Mayo. The big-shot linebacker sprained his right knee in the season opener and is projected to miss six to eight weeks of playtime, though he’s expected to be back for the end of the season.

It’s been a recurring issue in the media lately, but recently Tom Brady confirmed what the rest of the country has speculated - his wife, supermodel Gisele Bundchen, is indeed pregnant, and their first child together is due this December. Brady and Bundchen have been denying reports for months saying that Bundchen is with child, but a beaming Tom Brady revealed to ESPN’s Chris Berman over the weekend that Bundchen is indeed pregnant, saying his request to his wife was no Lamaze classes on Sundays.
Brady, who already has a son with former girlfriend/actress Bridget Moynahan, also joked to the media about being ready for baby No. 2, saying that the pregnancy and delivery “couldn’t be harder than this training camp, so I’ll be prepared. The women are the ones who have to do the work, we just have to be there and support them, so it’ll be nice to do that.” In the meantime, Brady hasn’t let Bundchen’s pregnancy interfere with his football. The superhero quarterback proved his comeback to be well worth the time off last week when he helped rocket the Patriots past the Bills in Week 1 of the NFL’s regular season. Brady could have a new addition to the family by this year’s playoffs, but we’re betting it won’t interfere with his A-game.

Buffalo QB Trent Edwards had one magnificent game yesterday against the New England Patriots, but ultimately the Bills were no match for the Pats, as Tom Brady led a powerful fourth quarter charge, helping the Patriots score 12 points in the final 2:10 of the game to trump the Bills with a 25-24 victory in Week 1 of regular season play. Brady threw for 378 yards and two touchdowns in his first full game in more than a year, connecting twice with tight end Ben Watson to lead the Patriots to the end zone.
While the Patriots are rejoicing a very close win over Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills last night, there was one setback during the game. Linebacker Jerod Mayo, last year’s NFL Defensive Rookie of the Year, went down with a knee injury in the first quarter of last night’s game, hurt after tackling Buffalo running back Fred Jackson and ending his 16-yard run. In true fashion, the Patriots haven’t announced the depth of Mayo’s injury, but it was reported that he told a teammate his injury was “nothing serious,” and hopefully Mayo will be back on the field in no time.

Richard Seymour sure didn’t expect to be traded to the Oakland Raiders last week as he was suddenly shipped from New England in exchange for a 2011 first-round draft pick, but that’s exactly what happened as the stunned defensive end and five-time Pro Bowler packed up and headed to the West Coast to make the shift from Foxborough to the Bay Area. After a weeklong holdout prior to making the jump to Oakland, Seymour is finally settled in with the Raiders, explaining his absence from Oakland last week by saying, “I’ve been really blindsided by the events that took place. I didn’t expect it. I didn’t understand what was going on. So when something happens, when you’re blindsided, you have to step back and realize what situation you’re in.”
After taking the time to relocate his family to the Bay Area, Seymour finally reported to practice with the Raiders over the weekend, even talking to the media while sporting a Raiders jersey with No. 92 on the front. “One thing I can assure Raider nation is I was [No. 93], I’m 92 now and 92 is ready to play some football,” Seymour said, “and I’m ready to kick things off on Monday night.” Seymour and the Raiders play the San Diego Chargers tonight in some Monday Night Football action, while the New England Patriots take the MNF slot against the Buffalo Bills tonight, as well.

Are Terrell Owens and the Buffalo Bills ready to overpower the New England Patriots Monday evening in the first Monday Night Football game of the 2009 regular season, or will the Patriots tack up their 12th straight win against Buffalo? It’s all to come Monday night, and with Tom Brady leading the way for the Patriots everything could go just as planned for New England at Gillette Stadium for the upcoming Bills-Patriots showdown. No NFL team has ever won 12 straight games against a single other team, but the Patriots could soon become the first, as the Bills have lost the last 11, including eight straight games at Gillette, which is where Monday’s game will take place.
As for the specifics, look for the Patriots defense to either sink or swim, as key players Richard Seymour, Mike Vrabel, Tedy Bruschi and Rodney Harrison are all off the squad this year, and also look to Tom Brady to make his first regular season appearance in a year. The momentum is already building, and Brady recently said, “I’ve played a lot of games, so it’s not like it’s the first game of my rookie season, that type of excitement. I think there’s just an excitement for a new season and to see what kind of team we have and to see what kind of mental toughness we have and what kind of character we have.” For the Bills, the addition of T.O. has given all sorts of confidence to Buffalo’s offense, so look for Owens and QB Trent Edwards to make some magic on the football field. Stay tuned for results from the game!

It’s becoming more and more apparent that the New England Patriots are after Philadelphia Eagles backup QB A.J. Feeley, as Feeley was released from the Philadelphia Eagles over the weekend right around the same time that the Pats chose to release Andrew Walter, one of two key backup quarterbacks behind Tom Brady. There has been speculation over the last couple weeks that New England might been shopping around for another backup to take the place of Matt Cassel, who will now start for the Kansas City Chiefs, and Walter’s release from the team was a great signifier that Feeley could soon be making his way to New England.
A.J. Feeley got squeezed out of the Eagles’ roster once Michael Vick was added to the lineup earlier this offseason in a surprise move, and of his release from Philly Feeley recently said, “My heart will always be real fond of Philadelphia because that’s where I got my start. It’s tough, but at the end of the day, besides playing on the field, there’s stuff that goes on upstairs [with management] that you have no control over. As a player, you can’t get caught up in that stuff.” Will A.J. Feeley become the new Matt Cassel under the reign of Bill Belichick this season? A deal is likely to play out soon if it’s going to happen at all, so stay tuned for more info on the quarterback situation in New England!
